John Matras is the Carrion Executive Officer of carbuzzard.com, a website providing access to more than 12,000 car reviews, road tests and driving impressions, plus other features seriously as he is able.
John Matras began writing about cars in 1980 and became a full-time automotive freelancer in 1988. He has contributed to hundreds of publications including the major American automotive magazines Car and Driver, Motor Trend, Road & Track, Automobile and Automobile Quarterly, as well as the New York Times, Mens Health and others.
His Escape Road columns, anecdotal reviews of classic and special interest automobiles, were read and enjoyed by automotive enthusiasts for more than twenty years.
Matras has also been published overseas, translated into Estonian for the regrettably defunct Estonian magazine AutoPluss. His words have also been translated into Portuguese for publication in a Brazilian website, and articles have been translated into Italian for publication in Italy.
He has authored four books, including the widely acclaimed Mazda RX-7 published by Motorbooks International. The book now sells on the internet for more than its original list price; Matras regrets that no royalties apply.
Matras earned a competition license and raced in Sports Car Club of America events and in younger days, raced motorcycles off-road in American Motorcyclist Association sanctioned events (and has the X-rays to prove it). Matras also shares a small part of an FIA world speed record, thanks to Saab Automobiles.
John Matras is the 1995 recipient of the International Motor Press Associations prestigious Ken W. Purdy Award for Excellence in Automotive Journalism. Only one Purdy, named for the legendary automotive writer, is awarded by IMPA each year. Matras has also received the Washington Automotive Press Associations Golden Quill Award.
Prior to automotive journalism, Matras employers included Dun & Bradstreet, U.S. Customs, Prudential Insurance and the Federal Highway Administration. He has a bachelors degree in history and economics from the University of Illinois and a masters degree in business administration from Governors State University (Illinois).
Matras has also been active in supporting youth athletics and school music and is an active church member. He has raised three daughters, has been happily married for more than 35 years and calls his mother every Sunday.
And thats the truth.
