This spectacular looking SUV is the latest in a string of new offerings coming out of Mazda. Actually, this is the first of three new vehicles that Mazda will release to the North American market. As with all new Mazdas, this 5 passenger crossover SUV will, as Mazda puts it, have the "Soul of a Sportscar" Well, we had a chance to sample this crossover and have to admit that Mazda's reputation is secure.
When we look at crossovers, we first have to determine what type of crossover we are talking about. Mazda believes that there are no less than 5 different types of crossover vehicle designs. There is the crossover between an SUV and a station wagon, an SUV and a minivan, an SUV and a Sedan, an SUV and a GT touring car and finally, an SUV and a sport car. Mazda feels that they have created an SUV with the characteristics of a sports car. Well, let's see, the styling is right on the money. The engine has been lifted right out of the MAZDASPEED6 and is certainly up to the image, the dash looks great and the handling is sharp and responsive with minimal body roll.
We spent a day driving around the Virginia countryside and came away with the feeling that Mazda came awfully close to achieving their goals. This is one of the sharpest small SUV's around. The CX-7 is powered by a turbocharged and intercooled 2.3-liter four-cylinder direct-injection gasoline engine that produces 244-horsepower at 5,000 rpm and will be coupled to Mazda's 6-speed automatic transmission.
In this case, they are putting their money where their Zoom, Zoom mouth is. This engine is similar to the MAZDASPEED6, but special tuning will deliver 258 lb-ft of torque at a low 2,500 rpm along with reasonable gas mileage It will be available in either front wheel drive or Active Torque-Split All-Wheel Drive.
The numbers look good and so does the styling. Watch this page for more details as they become available.
