A Guide to Finding the Causes of Toyota 4Runner Radiator Fan Problems
Radiator fans play an important part in maintaining the temperature of your 4Runner's engine compartment. If the fan were to stop working all of a sudden, your engine would soon overheat. Higher temperature readings during idling
Higher engine temperatures can be caused by many things, including a faulty radiator fan. To find out the problem, pop open the hood of your engine compartment and inspect the radiator fan.
Weird noises from the radiator fan could mean that the fan belt is slipping. Inspect the belt and check for any sign of considerable wear or damage. Make sure that the teeth of the belt are complete; missing teeth could affect the rotation of the pulleys, hampering the operation of the fan as a result. Make sure that there is no slack anywhere around the belt. If there is any, adjust the tensioners accordingly until the belt is tight enough.
The fan clutch controls how fast the radiator fan operates. At higher temperatures, the built-in coil spring mechanism reacts and allows the radiator fan to spin at a much higher rate. Try spinning the fan and the fan clutch. Both should spin freely to a stop. If the movement of the fan seems hampered, the clutch may be slipping or it could be starting to seize. Try rocking the fan around a little; if it wobbles, the clutch also has bad bearings. Replace the fan clutch in all instances.
Fan does not move
If the fan isn't functioning, take a look at the fan belt first. Chances are, the belt has worn out significantly and has finally snapped. Replace the belt immediately to prevent overheating. If the fan belt seems to be working just fine, then you could have a problem with the fan clutch. Try to diagnose the problem mentioned previously and replace the part when necessary.
