Rumors are rampant that Ford could be discontinuing its Edge SUV soon over claims that the automaker’s upcoming models would render the former “redundant.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ford Edge<\/a> has been a steady presence in the Blue Oval’s lineup for more than 10 years. In the last few model cycles, there have been no reports on the company having issues with the midsize SUV. But that is until AutoForescast Solutions claimed there were talks within the Ford headquarters that the Edge’s planned next-generation has been scrapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supposedly geared towards a 2023 release, the model was scheduled to get a full redesign that will see it ride on a new platform. Production was also set to continue at Ford’s plant in Oakville, Ontario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked about AFS’s claims, Ford did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ford Edge has essentially turned into a fleet vehicle for the company, which isn’t what it was originally intended for. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

But Sam Fiorani, vice president of AFS, told online publication Roadshow that the Ford Edge’s biggest obstacle is redundancy. Considering the upcoming arrivals of several Ford models that include the Bronco Sport, Bronco, as well as the new Escape, it appears that the mediocre sales of the Edge couldn’t help keep its spot in the lineup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For more than a decade, the model has remained relatively lesser known than most of its Ford siblings. It has also essentially turned into a fleet vehicle for the company, which isn’t what it was originally intended for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should Ford confirm sunsetting the Edge, this means the Ontario plant will also be vacant. The facility is currently dedicated to the production of the Edge, the last Ford model that’s being built in Canada after the company also discontinued the Flex and its cousin, the Lincoln MKT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, Ford<\/a> has not confirmed anything about the report nor mentioned anything about the Edge’s future. More information might be available in the coming months.
