General Motors is reportedly developing a model that could compete with the Jeep Wrangler<\/a>and it looks like it will be an SUV version of the GMC Jimmy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Decades ago, the name ‘Jimmy’ was used to refer to the brand’s version of the Chevrolet Blazer<\/a>. But this time around, it appears to be GM’s answer to the extremely popular Jeep Wrangler, as well as the upcoming Ford Bronco<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SUV comes with a body-on-frame design that also has off-road capabilities. It is likely to be positioned on GM’s mid-size truck lineup and ride on the GM31XX platform, which also includes the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups. In terms of powertrain, the new Jimmy is expected to have the same 3.6-liter V-6 engine as the two trucks, while the 2.8-liter Duramax turbodiesel four-cylinder could be an option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Truck-based SUVs are enjoying their share of the limelight these days and GM’s plans to release the new GMC Jimmy was brought about by the popularity of the latest Jeep Wrangler. The new Wrangler has seen strong sales despite being priced higher<\/a> than typical trucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The arrival of the GMC Jimmy is also expected to help drive attention to GMC’s new template for its off-road models – the AT4 – which the brand says will be applied to all its models in the coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the Jimmy does not meet expectations for the company, however, there is a possibility for the model to end up as a trim level for the Canyon pickup. And this is no surprise because the market has already seen the same thing happen to the ZR2 trim of the Chevy Colorado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
