General Motors recently confirmed that it is working on complete redesigns of its Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, which are scheduled for release in 2023.<\/p>\n

But while the models are undergoing a massive overhaul in the company’s So Jos dos Campos assembly plant in Brazil, what’s going to happen to the current generation of both pickup trucks in the market?<\/p>\n

Turns out, GM is not planning any updates for the current generations. This means that both the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon will remain untouched for the next model years until their redesigned versions are released four years from now. And although some sort of refresh was initially planned, the company has abandoned the idea altogether.<\/p>\n

And it’s not a bad thing for GM, as both the Colorado and Canyon manage to maintain strong sales despite the arrival of newer competition in the mid-size pickup truck segment.<\/p>\n

In 2018, GM sold a combined total of 168,334 Colorado and Canyon units in the United States, plus 20,000 more in Canada. Only the Toyota Tacoma was able to post better numbers with a total of 245,659 units sold. Released during the 2015 model year, the Colorado-Canyon tandem is the second best-selling mid-size pickup truck in the U.S.<\/p>\n

However, with the arrival of new rivals such as the Ford Ranger and Jeep Gladiator, GM’s plans to stretch the sales of the aging Colorado and Canyon may hurt the company. As the Ranger and Gladiator enter their first full model years, both models are recording steady sales figures with the potential to overtake GM’s trucks at any moment. In May alone, Ford sold 22,917 Ranger units, while the Gladiator is also showing strong numbers.<\/p>\n

But GM remains confident in the performance of the Colorado and Canyon even without minor updates. As long as both models do well in the market, the company would rather channel funds into the complete redevelopment of the trucks than waste it on short-term changes.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
