It’s been 15 years since Nissan debuted the current generation of the Frontier<\/a> in the market and since then, the model has not received any major design changes. So for the coming model year, the automaker is making up for it by finally giving it an upgrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The redesigned midsize truck is rumored to arrive either at the end of this year or early 2021 as a 2022 model. And just ahead of its debut, a prototype for the model was spotted while testing in Michigan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spy photos of the vehicle are circulating online, revealing a boxy shape for the new Frontier and the return of the King Cab configuration for the next generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nissan first shared teasers for the redesigned pickup earlier this year. And despite the truck being covered in camouflage, some of its features shared at the time are evident in the spotted Frontier prototype. For instance, the blunt front end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in spite of the same frame, the upcoming Frontier is believed to feature a new body and interior like the redesigned Toyota Tacoma. Aside from the King Cab layout, crew-cab models, as well as short- and long-bed configurations, are also expected to be available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of the powertrain, the truck is likely going to have the same 3.5-liter V-6 engine that Nissan introduced in 2020. This engine, paired with a nine-speed automatic, delivers up to 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. Rear- and four-wheel-drive options are also foreseen, plus a Pro-4X off-road trim level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
