Following their alliance’s decision to stop releasing new products in Europe and the United Kingdom, Mitsubishi and Nissan continue to channel their focus on producing vehicles in North America and other markets, where the automakers believe they have a stronger presence and bigger room to grow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the models leading the charge for Mitsubishi is the Outlander<\/a>, with its next-generation set to arrive for the 2022 model year. Scheduled to debut in the next few months, the vehicle was previously revealed to be sharing a platform with the all-new Rogue from the Nissan umbrella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In spy shots that recently circulated on the internet, the upcoming Outlander is seen with noticeable features that are reminiscent of the Rogue (although it still has Mitsubishi’s unique front-end styling).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Styling aside, people are curious about the Outlander’s powertrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May of this year, reports surfaced that the model will be powered by a Nissan engine. At the time, nothing came out of the rumors. However, a recent filing with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration seems to confirm the earlier reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the documents, the 2022 Outlander will be equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 188 horsepower, the same engine that powers the new Nissan Rogue. This gives the Outlander a 13% power increase from the previous 166 horsepower produced by its 2.4-liter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, it will be offered with two-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, also like the Rogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going for the 2.5-liter engine makes sense for Mitsubishi as it saves the automaker money on production costs, which it can invest in the development of the next-gen Outlander PHEV. The plug-in hybrid is a best-seller in the market and is also primed to be one of the models that will play a key role in the lineup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When its next-generation arrives, it is expected to deliver a range of more than 430 miles using an electrified 2.4-liter engine. But for now, Mitsubishi<\/a> has all hands on deck for the arrival of the regular Outlander.
