With pickup trucks, cargo space is important. Which is why truck beds have grown to become more than just a place to slide in loads of stuff. Nowadays, they can also double as a work table, as in the case of the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado with General Motors’ MultiPro and Multiflex tailgates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a way to respond, Ford<\/a> is reportedly working on its own innovation: the “Flexbed.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The automaker recently filed for a trademark on the name “Flexbed” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. According to the trademark registration, the name is “intended to cover the categories of land vehicles; customizable and organizational system for the cargo area of vehicles.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s unclear whether Ford will push through with the new feature. Nonetheless, its trucks are already phenomenal, Flexbed or no Flexbed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

While there isn’t much to glean from the application, the description suggests that Ford could be working on a new truck feature that can compete with the multi-function tailgates of its competitors. But instead of its own tailgate, the automaker is looking to design dividers for the truck bed to better organize smaller items and prevent them from moving around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unique bed styles are nothing new for Ford, though, as evidenced by the Flareside and Styleside. Still, it would be nice to see something from the brand that could rival GM’s tailgate designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
