Given the tough competition in the SUV and crossover segments these days, it’s no surprise that car companies continuously find ways to set their models apart from others by adding new features and innovations.<\/p>\n

Ford, after obtaining undisputed success in the truck segment with its F-150, is no exception as it look to further improving the performance of its SUVs and crossovers.<\/p>\n

In a report first published by The Drive, Ford was said to have recently applied a new patent for a movie projector built into the tailgate of the vehicle.<\/p>\n

It appears that Ford is planning to relocate the tailgate latch to accommodate a projector that can play movies and TV shows.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Based on the documents, the patent is described as a “liftgate… and a video projector mounted to the liftgate.” In addition, the projector is stated to be configured in such a way that the video is projected in a “direction away from the vehicle when the liftgate is in the open position.” Simply put, the projector will be placed on the bottom of the liftgate where the latch is typically found.<\/p>\n

With this setup, it appears that Ford is planning to relocate the latch to accommodate a projector that can play movies and TV shows while also functioning as a floodlight.<\/p>\n

The question, though, is whether the patented feature will officially go into production or just an optional attribute.<\/p>\n

“We submit patents on new inventions as a normal course of business, but they aren’t necessarily an indication of new business or product plans,” a Ford representative said.<\/p>\n

It doesn’t sound like something the consumers can bank on, but just the idea that a built-in projector is a possibility for future Explorer and Edge generations is enough for people to get their hopes up a little.
