Taking inspiration from a 207-year-old German fairy tale, Ford wants to make sure off-roaders will never get lost again with the help of its newest feature–the Breadcrumbs.<\/p>\n

Just as breadcrumbs helped Hansel & Gretel find their way home in the story, Ford’s Breadcrumbs was designed by the company’s software engineers to help adventurers get back on track.<\/p>\n

The first model to benefit from the new technology in the United States is the Ford Ranger, but the automaker confirmed it will also be available in other trucks.<\/p>\n

Ford’s Breadcumbs works by creating one virtual pin per second and displaying it as blue dots on the map. It can be used by off-roaders to view the exact path they took and retrace it to get back to the asphalt, if necessary. However, Breadcrumbs is not turned on all the time and will have to be manually enabled by the driver through the settings menu.<\/p>\n

The Blue Oval sees the feature as a necessity since there are instances when trails do not appear on the vehicle’s navigation system or show up incomplete. It also allows users to send pictures of the screen to friends or family to give them directions on how to reach a campsite.<\/p>\n

The Ranger Raptor sold in other global markets is already equipped with the Breadcrumbs feature. When it becomes available in the United States, it will be offered on the XLT and Lariat variants, which are equipped with SYNC 3 and navigation. Both trim levels are also offered with the standard touchscreen-based infotainment system, but buyers interested in the Breadcrumbs feature would have to avail of the optional Technology Package in order to unlock navigation.
