Despite how ubiquitous electric vehicles may be in the media, they only accounted for about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/10\/26\/americans-are-buying-teslas-not-evs-heres-why-thats-about-to-change.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"4% of new U.S. car sales\">4% of new U.S. car sales<\/a> in 2021. How the following EV flaws are addressed will determine the platform&rsquo;s future, and how soon you might be saying goodbye to fossil fuels forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Batteries<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Arguably the biggest elephant in the room: electric car batteries&rsquo; environmental impact. Lithium-ion batteries used to power EVs are potent but have a less-than-clean entry into the world. Mining the raw materials needed (think lithium, cobalt, and nickel) is a dirty job that raises major environmental and safety concerns (think child labor and health hazards). These rare earth materials come from aquifers deep below the earth&rsquo;s surface and the mining process itself must be cleaned up if battery-powered cars are the new norm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"535\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lithium-mining-facility-australia-1024x535.jpg\" alt=\"lithium mining facility australia\" class=\"wp-image-67183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lithium-mining-facility-australia-1024x535.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.carparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lithium-mining-facility-australia-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.carparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lithium-mining-facility-australia-768x402.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lithium-mining-facility-australia-1536x803.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.carparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lithium-mining-facility-australia-scaled.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.carparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lithium-mining-facility-australia-150x78.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Revised battery designs will play an equally, if not more, important role than mining in the progress of EVs. Eliminating temperature-sensitive elements such as cobalt will increase safety and reduce the risk of fire. EVs have a much lower risk of fire than gas-powered vehicles, but battery fires are usually difficult to quell as we&rsquo;ve recently seen on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-22\/porsche-car-carrier-fire-drags-on-days-after-crew-abandoned-ship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Felicity Ace ship\">Felicity Ace ship<\/a> that caught fire with over 4,000 Volkswagen vehicles aboard&mdash;many of which were electric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although electric vehicles have far fewer moving parts than their traditional counterparts, all mechanical components have a finite service life, and some are longer than others. Most current battery packs are fused together as a single unit, making them unserviceable. Switching to a modular design would allow individual elements such as cathodes, anodes, and cooling systems to be replaced separately. This, in turn, drastically extends the life of a battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recycling<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lithium-ion-battery-pack-assembly-1-1024x667.jpg\" alt=\"lithium ion battery pack assembly 1\" class=\"wp-image-67185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lithium-ion-battery-pack-assembly-1-1024x667.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.carparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lithium-ion-battery-pack-assembly-1-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.carparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lithium-ion-battery-pack-assembly-1-768x500.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lithium-ion-battery-pack-assembly-1-1536x1001.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.carparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lithium-ion-battery-pack-assembly-1-scaled.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.carparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lithium-ion-battery-pack-assembly-1-150x98.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Batteries eventually require replacement, and when they no longer hold a charge, lithium ion battery recycling enters the picture as a logical choice. However logical it may be, only a small percentage of these lithium-ion batteries are being recycled. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/aug\/20\/electric-car-batteries-what-happens-to-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Some estimates predict\">Some estimates predict<\/a> over 12-million tons of lithium-ion batteries are set to be retired between now and 2030. End-of-life, and new &ldquo;second-life&rdquo; solutions need to be implemented across a larger percentage of batteries to minimize harmful waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Countries in Asia notoriously do a better job of recycling these batteries, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idtechex.com\/en\/research-report\/li-ion-battery-recycling-2020-2040\/751\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"whereas North America lags behind\">whereas North America lags behind<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Electric Motors<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Batteries and charging concerns are amongst the most discussed topics, but electric motors themselves must not be forgotten. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idtechex.com\/en\/research-article\/emerging-electric-motor-technologies-for-the-ev-market\/24839\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"IDTechEx\">IDTechEx<\/a>, an independent market research firm focused on emerging technologies, predicts that over 100 million electric motors will be required annually by 2032 to meet EV demand. The hurdles that face battery technology are well-documented, but there&rsquo;s an optimistic attitude around EVs that tells us these problems are bound to be solved.
