General Motors is investing no less than $2.2 billion in the retooling of its Detroit-Hamtramck plant where the company’s first new electric pickups will be built by the end of 2021 along with other SUVs. The models set to be assembled at the plant will wear Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac badges as well as the highly anticipated model that will revive the Hummer nameplate.<\/p>\n

For the first time since it confirmed its electrification plans, GM talked about the upcoming trucks at an announcement in Michigan where it presented its plans for the facility. The backdrop behind a podium where GM President Mark Reuss and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer spoke showed a thin blue outline of a truck.<\/p>\n

The Detroit-Hamtramck plant is also set to build the Cruise Origin, GM’s self-driving, ride-sharing van-pod, with production scheduled to begin in early 2022. The company recently revealed the Origin at an event in San Francisco and will be built in partnership with autonomous driving startup Cruise, which is also owned by GM. This makes the Detroit-Hamtramck facility GM’s first plant dedicated to electric vehicles.<\/p>\n

“GM’s vision of the future is all-electric,” GM President Mark Reuss said. He also said the trucks and SUVs that will be built in GM’s “most technically advanced plant” will be offered in multiple variants and at different price points.<\/p>\n

GM’s future electric vehicles will ride on its new flexible electrical architecture that can reportedly support small, medium, and large vehicles, as well as short and long wheelbases, wide and narrow tracks, high and low load floors, low and high roof heights, base models, and trucks with full off-road and trailering capability.<\/p>\n

This new platform is also expected to utilize advanced powertrains, as well as safety systems and connectivity, and will be working together with a battery lab based in Warren, Michigan.<\/p>\n

Reuss, however, refused to confirm reports that the company is reviving the Hummer nameplate in the form of a pickup truck that will part of the GMC brand.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
