How to Choose the Right Bumper Extension

Who wouldn't want to be caught in a stylish, pimped-out car? When you've got the right set of bumper extensions, you can dress up your drab auto and turn it into a major looker. In case you decide to go in the market and find the perfect bumper extension for your vehicle, you might start to ask: How do I find the right bumper extension for my ride? Which extension fits my vehicle? How much do I have to spend for a set of extensions? Bumper extensions are available everywhere, and the tricky part is making the right choice. Here are the things you have to consider:

Material

Bumper extensions can be made of plastic, fiberglass, or carbon fiber.

  • Plastic: It is commonly used for modern vehicles because they are cheaper and easier to produce. So if you are looking for a basic extension that will simply add points to your ride's aesthetic appeal, then this is your best bet.
  • Carbon Fiber: If you are racer or an enthusiast who wants bumper extensions that can add a little boost to your aerodynamics, you might want to choose a carbon fiber extension. It is lighter and tougher than plastic; not only will it improve aerodynamics, but it will also improve vehicle safety.
  • Fiberglass: Adrenaline junkies who love off-road driving will definitely go for fiberglass bumper extensions. The toughest material of them all, fiberglass can definitely take the beating from rocky paths, sticky mud, and other damaging road debris that can dent or scratch the vehicle.

Color/Finish

Admit it; your main reason for getting an extension is to give your vehicle the look and personality that you want. This is why choosing the extension with the right color and finish is also important.

  • Primered: If you want a basic modern style, you'd want to go for a bumper extension with a primered or smooth primered finish.
  • Chrome: But if you want to flaunt your ride's classy appeal, you can match chrome extensions to its elegant trim.
  • Black and Textured Grey: If you're only after adding a contrast to your automobile's white or grey paint job, you can get black or textured gray extensions.

Product Fit

If you're not willing to spend much for this auto upgrade, you can opt for an OE replacement to get a bumper extension that is patterned after the original. However, if you're not working with a budget and you want a product that is easy to install and has a high quality, getting a component with a direct product fit would be advisable.

How to Pimp Your Mitsubishi Using Front Bumper Extensions

Are you tired of your auto's bare style? Your vehicle could definitely use a bumper extension upgrade. Easy to install and easily available, this component is a convenient way to reinvent and recreate your auto's outdated look.

NOTE: This procedure can only be applied to Mitsubishi Lancer.

Difficulty: Easy

Things you'll need:

  • Screwdrivers
  • Socket wrench (10)
  • Drill and drill bit (3mm and 8mm)
  • Extension bar
  • Protective goggles
  • Round file
  • Shop towel and degreaser
  • Nut
  • Bolt with washer
  • Owner's manual
  • Steps:

    1. Take off the front bumper according to the manual. Turn the bumper over and look at the marked slots underneath. Drill holes into these slots. (Make sure you follow the specified measurements, 3mm and 8mm.) Finish these holes using the file.
    2. Check out the other side of the bumpers back and drill another set of 4 holes. Finish the holes using the file.
    3. Attach the bolts at the back of the left front bumper extension; you can clean and degrease the mounting section to ensure that bolts are properly secured. Insert these bolts into the front bumper; start with the 8mm hole. Use the wrench to slightly tighten the nuts.
    4. Carefully fit the lower side of the bumper extension with the bolts and nuts. Make sure there is no space between the extension and the bumper.
    5. Attach the front bumper to the vehicle and make sure that the fasteners are tightly wound.

    CAUTION:

    • A Lancer front bumper extension may have an adhesive tape. Avoid touching it using a dirty hand or glove so it won't lose its adhesion.
    • Never use organic solvents such as thinner, benzene, or gasoline as degreasers.
    • Avoid scratching the bumper surface while installing the bolts. You can enlarge the drilled hole if it won't fit.
