Tips When Buying an Off-Road Light Wiring Harness

If you usually drive during nighttime or explore the wilderness where there is poor lighting, it is important that your vehicle is equipped with the right set of off-road lights. These lights will be your only guide when you set out for an evening drive, that's why you should always ensure that your off-road lights are in good condition. When your lights fail, you should check if the system behind it is still in good shape. One of the first parts to check is the off-road light wiring harness. This protects your wire from getting corroded. When buying a wiring harness, you need to take note of a few things to make sure that you will only get the best part that is fit for your vehicle.


  • When buying an off-road light wiring harness, know how much current your accessory light will draw to determine what type of harness is appropriate for your application. If you are not familiar on how to do this, it is best to consult your trusted technician for an assessment.
  • Read the features of the part that you are buying. The off-road light wiring harness of your vehicle can accommodate the correct power and amperage. This is to prevent overheating and ensure proper wiring. When buying a wiring harness, consider the quality and durability at all times.
  • Remember that every lighting project is different. It is important that you consider the proper size of the wiring, switches, and fuses need to be used. It should be determined for your specific vehicle and electrical load.
  • Install off-road lights that are legal for use in your state. Some states do not allow off-road lights above the headlights to be uncovered. You may wire in rear-facing lights into the reverse lights to give additional lighting when you are backing up.
  • Choose a wiring harness and switch that are pre-wired and plugged in together. You would need a bit of rework if you choose to use electrical current to activate your LED light bar.
  • Ensure that when your high beams are on, the current goes to the dash switch first. To do this, cut the wire coming from the switch to the prong on the relay, and wire it to your high beam lead or your backup light wire.


  • DON'T purchase a wiring harness that is rated lower for the amperage that the accessories need to pull. It can cause the wire to short out and burn out even before the battery overheats and possibly explodes.
  • DON'T tap into the existing fuse block or wiring harness. Get your power directly from the battery's positive terminal instead.
  • DON'T forget to solder the wires, crimp the connectors, and put a dielectric paste where they come in contact. This is to prevent it from getting rusty and corroded over time.
  • DON'T buy off-road light wiring harness or other parts from an old or second-hand vehicles. These parts could be already worn out, which could cause only problems when you install them in your vehicle.
