Troubleshooting Problems with a Chevrolet K1500 Ignition Coil
The main role of the ignition coil is to take electricity from a 12-volt battery and pump it up to thousands of volts, enough to ignite the fuel in an engine and make it start running. The coil plays such an important role in starting and running the engine that any problem affecting the part could leave truck owners frustrated. Some common problems associated with a malfunctioning ignition coil include hard starting, engine misfire, and reduced fuel economy. Inspect the electrical wires running from the ignition coil to the distributor and check if these are damaged or broken. Replace these wires as needed. You can test the ignition coil with an ohmmeter as well to determine if it is approaching failure. Try checking both the primary and the secondary resistance. To check the primary resistance, connect the meter to terminals 1 and 15 and check the readings; a working ignition coil should get a reading of 0.5 to 2.0 ohms. To find out the secondary resistance, measure the high-voltage outlet directly; you should get a reading between 8.0 and 19.0 kiloohms. If you get readings far different from those given, it means your ignition coil is failing and that it must be replaced soon.
Engine misfire, rough idling, and reduced fuel economy
Both problems listed above could be caused by other malfunctioning components such as timing belts, fuel injectors, and spark plugs. Check these components first before turning your attention to the ignition coil. If you managed to slim the suspects down to the ignition coil and a spark plug, there is a simple way to find out which among the two is malfunctioning. Simply identify the cylinder that is misfiring and switch its sparkplug with a working one. If the cylinder stops misfiring, it means that the spark plug is defective; otherwise, the ignition coil is problematic.
