    Look for the wear indicator.


    Luckily, it's not difficult to determine when your vehicle is ready for some brake work. Disc brakes usually include a part called a wear indicator. A wear indicator is a small piece of metal attached to the brake pad that contacts the brake rotor when the pad material has been worn down to a certain level. When the wear indicator grinds against the rotor, it makes a squealing noise as you apply the brakes. This noise is a signal which tells you it's time to have your brakes examined. In other words, noisy brakes aren't something to mess around with. If you hear that sound when you apply the brakes in your vehicle, have them checked out as soon as possible.


    Resurface the rotors as needed.


    The brake pads may experience premature wear and tear if the rotors are warped or are not smooth. Scoring happens when rotors acquire grooves made by constant grinding of debris against its surface. This won't bode well for the brake pads because these grooves tend to be rough and the rougher the surface, the faster the pads will fade. In addition, warping or bends along the rotor will reflect the same result.


    Change the brake pads at recommended intervals.


    The brake system should be inspected at intervals regularly. The recommended intervals are in the range of 12,000 to 15,000 miles of normal driving. Normal driving constitutes driving mostly on smooth pavements, not carrying heavy loads, seldom driving at fast speeds, and seldom driving on inclined surfaces. The brake pads should be physically for any grooves deeper than 1/16 inch. Each pad should be measured at several points and thickness according to the manufacturer's specification.


    Inspect for corrosion near the brake pad area.


    Finally, it is also important to carefully inspect the part of the brake pad where the lining is bonded to the heavy steel backing plate. The pads should be replaced if there is any sign of corrosion or separation in this area.
