Faded and dingy headers
No part is immune to wear and tear, so as time passes, you might find your auto's headers to look faded and dingy. This happens because the part is constantly exposed to heat coming from the oily engine bay. For diagnosis, a simple visual inspection should be enough to detect faded headers. In other instances, faded headers may be the result of using low-quality paint. You see, using high-temperature header paint on your car's headers will help preserve your vehicle's original look.
Presence of rust
Exhaust pipes and headers are made of iron. Combine this setting with constant exposure to exhaust gases and heat, and you have the perfect recipe for rust. Other header types rust because of poor coating, which is usually just painted outside. When the surface of the header is not coated with anti-rust material, rust spots can develop from inside and spread outwards.
Rusting header bolts
When the headers rust, there is also a risk for the header bolts to get corroded. When this happens, it will get stuck and make it hard for you to reach the exhaust manifolds and headers. Luckily, corroded bolts can be spotted easily through visual inspection.
Leaking headers are easily detected because of the loud rumbling noises they produce and the unburned fuel they emit. Simply check for a large graphite gasket or a metal ball and socket-type flange between the manifold and the header pipe and inspect if there are signs of leakages. You can easily tell if they are defective if there's carbon buildup or discoloration.
