Toyota Pickup Mirror

Troubleshooting Your Toyota Pickup Mirror

With the Toyota pickup mirror, you can easily see your rear surroundings without having to turn your head towards the back. Because it is a safety component, you cannot drive without it installed. However, the rear- and side-view mirrors are also capable of failing, especially if they are electrically powered. If your pickup truck has mirrors like these, then you have to know what to do if they get faulty.

When one power side mirror does not work

One of the problems you may encounter with your vehicle is when one of the power side mirrors does not work. First, check the switch that controls the component's movement. Then, access the faulty mirror's wiring and, using a multimeter, check for power while you are moving the switch. You may also want to try pulling off the door panel and inspecting the wiring inside. Use the multimeter as well to check if one of the connections is not getting any power.

When both power side mirrors do not work

If not one but both of your power side mirrors fail, the first thing you should check would be the instrument panel fuse and see if it has blown. If it has not, look for the fuse underneath the control panel, which is usually where the fuse for the mirrors is found, and see if it is blown. Replace any blown fuses you see just to make sure. If both mirrors are still not working, then there might also be a problem with the switch. Test the wiring for power, and if it registers enough volts, then the switch needs to be replaced.

When the electric rear-view mirror is your problem

If you are experiencing problems with your rear-view mirror, you can do the following diagnosis. Note that you do not have to start the engine in order to operate your rear view mirror. Just turn the ignition switch and the component will receive power from the battery.

While operating the mirror's control switch, listen for the motors running. If you can hear them, then it is likely that the mechanism inside the component's housing has a problem. To get rid of this issue, you will have to replace the motor or the entire mirror assembly.

If the electric rear view mirror is not working, immediately check the main fuse for the component's circuit.

  • Tips on Maintaining Your Toyota Pickup Mirror

Your truck's mirrors are your eyes for your rear surroundings. The Toyota pickup mirror helps you see the blind spots, especially when you are changing lanes or when you are backing up your truck. However, if you neglect maintaining this component, you will have a hard time seeing what's behind you. Not having a functional mirror will make a bad excuse to the police officer when you back up to an object (or a person). To avoid this terrible incident, you have to regularly clean your truck's mirrors.

    Cleaning tips

You can use the same cleaning products you use on the glassware in your home to clean your truck's mirrors. Household cleaners are especially useful in removing dirty spots on the mirror. However, first make sure that the cleaner you will use does not contain any abrasive or harmful chemicals.

When using a cleaning product, do not spray it directly onto the mirror. Instead, spray it on a dry, lint-free cloth and then wipe the component clean. This will prevent the solution from getting into the edges of the mirror and damaging them.

Do not let the cleaner stay on the glass for too long; wipe it with another dry, lint-free cloth. This will prevent the solution from leaving marks on the surface.

For general cleaning, the very best and safest cleaner is clean, warm water used with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not splash the mirror with water as it could leave some marks on the component. Instead, dip the cloth in the water and wring it thoroughly before wiping. Then, dry the mirror immediately using a dry, lint-free cloth to prevent any watermarks left on the component.

Aside from lint-free cloth, you can also use sturdy paper towels or even crumpled newspaper. However, use newspaper only when wiping the mirror with a cleaning solution. When drying the component, wipe it with a cloth or paper towel instead.

To remove small scratches, you can remove them with a buffer and toothpaste or jeweler's rouge. Put a small amount of toothpaste or jeweler's rouge on the buffer and apply it to the damaged area only. For your safety, wear a dust mask while buffing so you will not inhale any generated dust particles. Buff the scratched surface as carefully as possible; too much force might damage the component.
