Take the negative post off the battery while running and drive down the road, if if dies in 10-15 minutes the alternator is bad, if it stays going for awhile it's still good, or hook up a battery and alternator tester and make sure the vehicle is rrunning when you test it

If your car will start up and run, this is the one of the best ways to check. Start your car, while it is running disconnect your battery cables. If the car shuts off your alternator is junk if not then your alternator is good. Hope this helps!

Hi there,
Here are simple steps to know if the alternator in your vehicle is faulty after not using it for a few months:
1. Try to start the engine. If the engine is hard to start or does not start at all, it indicates a weak or dead battery which is consequently caused by a faulty alternator.
2. Check the voltage of the battery. Use a multimeter to get voltage across the terminals. A fully charged battery would read from 12.6 to 12.8 volts. But if it is lower, it may indicate that the battery is not properly charged, which is a result of a bad alternator.
3. Measure the battery voltage while the engine is running. Let the engine run for a few minutes, and measure the voltage across the two terminals. A properly working and charging alternator will provide a 13.8 to 14.4 volts reading.
4. The most common is a battery (charging system) warning light showing on your dash. If it remains on while the engine is running, it is a clear indicator of a faulty alternator.
I hope this helps!

I have a 2994 toyota rav 4 and ny alternator went about 4 years ago. The first sign is the panel light going on and the next would be your losing electrical power as you keep driving.

Remove the black wire running to your battery with the car running if the car shuts down it's your alternator. I just had the same problem
