Here are the usual causes of abnormal sounds coming from the engine when idle:
1. Belt or pulley issues, worn-out drive, or serpentine belts.
2. Exhaust system issues, leaking exhaust manifold or catalytic converter
3. Defective engine/motor or transmission mounts.
4. Engine misfires due to defective ignition coils, spark plugs, and others.
5. Sounds from a defective power steering pump, a/c compressor, or water pump.
