Hi there,
That is correct-the brake light switch on a 2002 Toyota Echo is mounted at the top of the brake pedal, and yes, it can cause intermittent starting issues since the car must detect brake pedal pressure before allowing the engine to start. Here are the general steps for replacing the brake pedal switch on your car:
1. Prepare the tools you will need, such as a portable light/flashlight, 12/14mm wrench (for the locknut, if applicable), a small socket set, or an adjustable wrench. Prepare the part near you (the brake light switch).
2. Locate the switch with a connector (under the driver-side dashboard, on the brake pedal arm bracket).
3. Disconnect the socket connector for the brake light switch.
4. Loosen up the locking nut of the part and remove it. Replace with the new brake light switch and tighten the locking nut the same way you removed it earlier.
5. Connect the socket wiring harness for the brake light switch.
6. Test the brake light switch by starting the car first. Then if the car starts well, try pressing the brake pedal and have somebody check the tail lights if the red stop light powers on and lit up.
I hope this procedure helps!
