This sounds like a classic case of CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) overheating or failure, which is unfortunately common in 2017 Nissan Rogues with the Jatco CVT.
Symptoms Recap:-
Car doesn’t shift properly after driving for a while
-
Occurs especially after:
-
Driving 65+ mph
-
Hard braking
-
-
Car begins to stall
-
Temporarily resolves after pulling over and waiting
-
The Rogue’s CVT tends to overheat under stress, causing the system to go into "fail-safe" or limp mode to protect itself.
-
This limits power or gear changes—feels like it’s not shifting or bogging down.
-
After cooling off, it temporarily works again.
-
Scan for CVT temp codes (P0841, P0868, P0776, etc.)
-
Install an aftermarket CVT cooler (Nissan later issued TSBs recommending it in severe-use areas)
-
Check for Nissan Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) NTB17-079b
-
Many 2017 Rogues suffer premature CVT wear, often around 60k–100k miles.
-
Symptoms: slipping, shuddering, loss of acceleration, and eventually stalling behavior under load.
-
Any metal shavings in the CVT fluid (use a dipstick or drain a small sample)
-
Fluid condition: burnt smell, dark color = bad
-
Transmission fluid change history (Nissan CVT fluid NS-3 only!)
-
If the issue triggers specifically after hard braking, check:
-
Brake switch or brake light switch (may confuse the ECM)
-
ABS sensors or wheel speed sensors
-
-
But if the symptoms consistently come with highway driving + braking, it’s probably still tied to the transmission's heat cycle.
-
Scan for transmission-related codes (even if check engine light is off)
-
Check CVT fluid condition and level
-
Install a CVT cooler if keeping the car
-
Avoid long highway drives or hills until fixed
