If fluid shoots out after reinstalling them, this means something in the connection is incorrect or missing.
What most likely happened is that you encountered a missing or misinstalled retaining clip or fitting. If you simply pushed the steel line back in without the retaining clip or with a damaged/missing O-ring, it can’t seal; hence, fluid will spray out under pressure.
Here’s a quick fix:
Inspect the transmission case ports: Are there plastic or metal clips inside the fittings? Are the O-rings intact? Are the lines going in fully and evenly?
Check the steel lines: Are they bent or flared improperly now? Do they have the correct end fitting (quick-connect style)?
Reinstall with new fittings (if needed): You may need to replace the retaining clips and O-rings. Ford usually sells a transmission cooler line repair kit with the correct clips/seals.
After that, what should you do then? Well, for starters, stop driving the car. Trans fluid loss = fast transmission death. Buy the correct trans line quick-connect fitting repair kit (or O-ring and clip set). Reinstall with the clip in place, then push the line in until it clicks.
Hope this helps!
