Yes, having the transmission overfilled can definitely cause problems. On your 2014 Dodge Journey AWD, too much fluid can lead to aeration (foaming) as the gears whip the fluid, which reduces hydraulic pressure and causes slipping or delayed engagement. That said, the fact that it only goes into reverse when cold and then loses drive afterward suggests there may already be internal damage from running it very low on fluid. The first step would be to get the fluid level corrected to spec—drain the excess and make sure it’s checked properly with the transmission at operating temperature, on level ground, and following the manufacturer’s procedure. If it still won’t move after correcting the fluid, the low-fluid episode may have damaged the clutches or pump, in which case a transmission rebuild or replacement could be necessary.
