If your 2012 Subaru Impreza hatchback has lost power steering, the first step is to figure out whether you have hydraulic or electric power steering (EPS)--because the fix depends on that.
If it’s hydraulic (found in earlier trims), check the power steering fluid reservoir under the hood. If it’s low, refill it with the correct fluid (Subaru ATF or specified power steering fluid) and inspect for leaks around the pump, hoses, and steering rack. A whining noise or foamy fluid usually points to air in the system or a failing pump.
If it’s electric power steering, which some 2012 Imprezas use, there’s no fluid--it’s controlled by an electric motor and steering control module. In that case, a blown fuse, bad steering torque sensor, or failed EPS motor can cause total loss of assist. Start by checking the EPS fuse and any related relays in the under-dash and under-hood fuse boxes.
If no obvious leaks or fuse issues are found, you may need to have the system scanned for power steering or EPS codes, since the control module can disable assist if it detects a sensor fault. Once you know whether it’s a hydraulic or electric issue, you can decide if it’s something as simple as a leak or electrical connection--or if it’s time for a shop to test the pump or EPS motor.
