On an ’83 GMC S15 Jimmy, a transmission shimmy combined with an early shift from 3rd to overdrive is usually related to either a torque converter issue or a hydraulic control problem inside the transmission. A very common cause is a torque converter clutch (TCC) engaging too early or shuddering, which can happen if the transmission fluid is old, contaminated, or at the wrong level. Worn or sticking valve body components, especially the governor or TV (throttle valve) system on older automatics, can also cause improper shift timing and shuddering. Additionally, engine-related inputs--such as a misadjusted throttle linkage, vacuum leak, or incorrect vacuum signal to the transmission modulator (if equipped)--can make the transmission think the engine load is lighter than it really is, causing it to upshift too soon. Before assuming the transmission itself is failing, it's important to check fluid condition and level, vacuum lines to the modulator, throttle linkage adjustment, and engine performance, since any of those can directly affect shift quality and timing on these older GMC drivetrains.
