Welcome to the forum—sorry your first post has to be such a frustrating one, but you’ve already done a lot of the right troubleshooting.
On a 2002 Cadillac DeVille, the fact that the relay clicks, the key turns normally, and valet mode is ruled out strongly suggests the problem is either a failed trunk release actuator/solenoid, a mechanical jam in the latch, or something physically blocking the latch from releasing (your clothing-in-the-latch theory is very plausible). Since the relay is energizing, power is likely being sent, but the actuator may be weak or seized. Applying direct 12V to the actuator would normally pop the trunk, but identifying the correct wires without access is difficult, and applying more than 12V risks frying the circuit.
Unfortunately, GM did not include an easily reachable internal release on all DeVilles, and the rear seat pass-through on base models is notoriously useless. At this point, the least destructive and most reliable option is usually to drill a small access hole behind the license plate, then manually trip the latch with a long screwdriver; body shops and locksmiths do this regularly and it can be repaired cleanly afterward. If the latch is jammed by debris, that will immediately confirm it. Once open, expect to replace the trunk latch/actuator assembly, as forcing it usually finishes off an already failing unit. Given the circumstances and your safety concern, you’re absolutely justified in wanting to get that trunk open sooner rather than later.
