Volvo does have a dedicated special tool (Volvo tool #999 7104 or similar, depending on your exact engine) designed to drive the new seal in evenly without damaging it. Your dealer or a Volvo specialist would use this. However, for the DIY mechanic, you can often get away without it by using a common alternative method.
Most experienced DIYers successfully install the rear main seal on a Volvo C70 using a large socket or a seal driver set that matches the outer diameter of the seal, combined with a rubber mallet. Tapping it in gradually and evenly all the way around. The key is making sure the seal goes in perfectly straight and flush, as even a slight angle will cause it to leak immediately.
A couple of things to keep in mind: first, lightly lubricate the outer edge and lip of the new seal with clean engine oil before installation to help it seat properly and protect it on first startup. Second, make sure the sealing surface on the crankshaft is clean and smooth; any rust, scoring, or debris will cause the new seal to leak regardless of how well it's installed. If the crank surface is worn or grooved, you may need a repair sleeve to give the new seal a fresh surface to ride on.
Bottom line: the special tool makes it easier and more precise, but a correctly-sized socket or seal driver from an auto parts store will do the job fine for a careful DIYer. Hope this helps!
