On your 1997 Ford Expedition, losing reverse while keeping all forward gears is almost always an internal transmission problem, specifically pointing to the reverse drum, reverse band, or direct clutch pack wearing out or failing. These components handle reverse exclusively, which is why forward gears still work fine.
First things first: check your transmission fluid level and condition. Low or burnt fluid can cause selective gear loss and is always the free first step. If the fluid looks dark and smells burnt, a transmission flush and filter change may temporarily help but likely won't fully restore reverse if internal damage has already occurred.
On the 4R70W transmission in the '97 Expedition, worn reverse clutch packs are the most common cause of exactly this symptom. Unfortunately this typically means an internal rebuild is needed; there's no solenoid or sensor fix for a true reverse-only failure. Get it to a reputable transmission shop for a proper diagnosis before it gets worse.
