1987 F250 6.9 Diesel (2 large batteries) panel voltage gauge went up to about 15.5 volts, battery warning light on, stayed this way for c. 8 miles. After shutting down and restarting about an hour later, charging was normal, rose to about fourteen volts and stayed there. Voltmeter applied to battery matches instrument panel reading. What happened?
