Jeep announced a recall of its 2014 Cherokee SUVs due to a software problem that can cause the transmission to unexpectedly shift into neutral and reduce power.
Reports claim that one of the clutches in the automatic transmission causes the sudden shift to neutral, which, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, could potentially lead to an accident. It happens when a component of the transmission is unable to adequately manage the flow of transmission oil.
Approximately 83,000 units of the US-market Cherokee built from February 27, 2013 to July 11, 2014 will be pulled out from dealerships. It also includes about 17,530 units outside the United States such as Canada, Mexico, and Europe.
The company, however, announced that only the 2014 models with a 3.2-liter V6 engine are affected by the issue. Jeep’s parent company, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, also clarified that it is not aware of any crashes and injuries related to the problematic transmission.
FCA also announced that dealers will work on the necessary updates on the transmission software at no charge to Cherokee owners and that they can expect notifications regarding the recall beginning August 2, 2019.
