Three Symptoms of a Busted Chevrolet Monte Carlo Vapor Canister

The vapor canister is one part the Chevrolet Monte Carlo that keeps your car clean and environmentally friendly. It collects the harmful gasses from the fuel so that it's reused for combustion. It works similarly to how a catalytic converter filters exhaust fumes. If this part fails, you car is one step closer to failing an emissions test. The vapor canister is a fairly reliable part that shouldn't need replacement. However, the stock one in the Monte Carlo is a problematic piece that's constantly been reported to need a replacement. Strong fuel odor

The fact that your car mostly runs and depends on fuel shouldn't be noticeable for you-unless you're running low on it and it's time to visit the gas station. However, if your nose picks up a strong odor that smells like pure and unprocessed fuel, this isn't a good sign. This is the scent that the vapor canister is supposed to collect and keep. The fact that the stench is making its way out of the fuel system and into your nose is a symptom of a busted one.

Error P0440

The check-engine light should come up if you have any sort of problem with the parts that involve getting the motor running. Once you take the car to get scanned, getting the code P0440 should make things clear that you have busted vapor canister that needs to be serviced. You can clean and remove any clogs in it if it's still repairable. Unfortunately, most vapor canisters of the Monte Carlo are beyond repair and need a replacement.

Sudden pressure drop

There should be enough pressure inside the fuel tank for the vapor canister to work properly. If it gets too low for the part, it struggles and eventually breaks. Pump some nitrogen in the system to test for leaks. Any sudden drop in pressure indicates either a cracked canister or holes in the fuel hoses. If you also notice that there are drops of fuel under the engine bay or somewhere near the tank, there may be holes in that region as well that you should take care of immediately.

Problems with this part can be avoided by simply following some maintenance tips and tricks. These aren't difficult jobs reserved only for professionals. The following are three easy and simple ways for you to take care of your car's vapor canister.


    Clean the canister and all its attachments.


    There needs to be a clear and steady flow of air running to and from the vapor canister for it to work. Any dirt stuck in the system results to clogs which limit the amount of bad gas collected by this device. Once in a while, take the time to remove the canister to give it a good clean. The hoses attached to the canister should also be clear. Dislodge any buildup on these. Look at the fuel filter near the part to see if it needs replacement.


    Fully tighten the fuel cap.


    Remember to return and tighten the fuel cap every time you get your Monte Carlo refueled. The seal ensures that there is enough pressure to keep the components and byproducts of burning fuel inside the system. With this, the canister can easily suck and manage the bad gas inside. A tight cap also prevents excessive outside air and elements from entering and getting absorbed into the assembly. If left slightly open, these extra materials end up inside and easily damage the canister. A loose one is a costly mistake that adds unnecessary stress to the part.


    Don't fill the tank all the way to the brim.


    The nozzle in a service station's pump automatically stops and clicks when the fuel in the tank reaches a certain level. Don't force extra drops of gas in and fill it to the brim just to stretch your full tank. It's important that the vapor canister has a pocket of air inside the assembly for it to work properly. Without it, it's as if the part's performance is choked and limited.
