When Ford announced that the upcoming Bronco will ride on the same platform underpinning the Ford Ranger, it confirmed that both models will share the same mechanical features and a lot of people assumed this also meant the Bronco will get the same engine that powers the Ranger.

The Ford Ranger is currently equipped with a 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged inline-four engine with 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

But, as it turns out, it’s not going to be the case.

Sources involved with the upcoming Bronco are claiming the more powerful 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 used in the F-150, Edge ST, and Lincoln Nautilus will be used to power the SUV. The engine makes 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft. of torque and will be mated to the same transmission.

However, it’s still not confirmed if the V6 is going to be the only engine option for the Bronco. There is also a possibility for the inline-four to be offered for the base trims.

But if the Bronco does end up getting the V6, this will give the SUV more power than its closest rival, the Jeep Wrangler, which is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 that makes 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.

The arrival of the reborn Ford Bronco is still a little over a month away with the official reveal set to happen at the 2020 New York Auto Show in the first week of April.

Before that, a special debut is also in the works for the model where planned live streaming is expected to take place sometime next month.
