Disconnect the battery
It’s also safer to disconnect the battery.
Bleed the coolant
In order to change the water pump, it is necessary to carry out a complete bleed of your cooling system.
Remove the alternator
To gain easier access to the water pump, you can remove the alternator first. However, this is not mandatory.
Remove the serpentine belt
While you’re at it, you can change your serpentine belt and tensioner pulley, as access is easier.
Remove the water pump pulley
To access the water pump retaining bolts, you need to remove the water pump pulley. Secure the water pump pulley with a pulley lock wrench.
Insert the 2 pins of the wrench into the holes in the pulley.
You can now unscrew the 3 pulley retaining bolts with a 10 mm wrench. Then, remove it.
Remove the water pump
Using a 10 mm socket, unscrew the 5 water pump retaining bolts.
You can easily access the first 3 retaining bolts on top of the water pump.
The last 2 bolts are more difficult to access as they are under the water pump. You can also use an extender for different access points.
Tips
Remember to position the liquid collector under the pump.
Be careful, when removing it, coolant remaining in the circuit will flow.
Clean the gasket surface
Remove the seal.
Protect the entrance to the cooling circuit by plugging it with a cloth to prevent impurities from polluting the circuit.
To avoid any risk of leaks, clean the water pump seal surface thoroughly.
Informations
Everyone’s natural reflex is to take the water pump in hand and turn the pump pulley to check that this element is rotating correctly. But this is a serious mistake that can irreversibly damage the water pump. You need to immerse the pump in coolant, and to turn it around ten times. This prevents subsequent leaks, as the pump must never run dry.
Prepare the water pump
Get the new water pump.
Get the new seal, and soak it in the coolant.
Then put it in place on the new water pump.
Remove the cloth.
Install the new water pump
Take the new water pump and install it, making sure the seal is firmly in place on the pump.
Loosely screw a bolt back on to hold it together.
You can now screw in all the water pump retaining bolts until they make contact.
Finish tightening the bolts in staggered order using a torque wrench.
Put the the water pump pulley back
We recommend installing a new water pump pulley. Replace the water pump pulley.
Using the pulley lock wrench and a 10 mm wrench, tighten the 3 pulley retaining bolts.
Finish tightening using a torque wrench.
Put the serpentine belt back
You can now put the serpentine belt back in place.
Pay careful attention to which way up you use it. The writing on the belt must turn clockwise.
Slide the new belt around the different elements respecting the layout from the initial assembly.
Put the alternator back in place
Return the alternator to its housing.
Finalise the reassembly
To fully put it back in place, lift the serpentine belt tensioner in order to wind the serpentine belt onto all of the pulleys.
Then release the belt tensioner to fully extend the belt. Before starting your car again, check that the belt is properly positioned in all the pulleys.
Add coolant
Now you need to refill the radiator with coolant and purge any air from the circuit.
Put the vehicle back on the ground
Then, you will be able to put the wheel back on your vehicle.
Put the car back on the ground and block the wheel properly.
Reconnect the battery
Reconnect the battery.
Operation complete.
