Question: I purchased this alternator, and less than 2000 miles it or the voltage regulator has failed. It fails a bench test at an auto parts store. It doesnt charge the battery with the car running. I just purchased a new regulator from carparts.com. Can the alternator cause the voltage regulator to fail? Hi Alan, I'm glad to assist you. I believe it is time to replace the alternator. Still, here are signs of a bad alternator:
1. Dim or Overly Bright Lights.
2. Dead Battery.
3. Slow or Malfunctioning Accessories.
4. Trouble Starting or Frequent Stalling.
5. Whining Noises.
6. Smell of Burning Rubber or Wires.
7. Battery Warning Light on Dash.
