They are not the same material.as the factory It seems like a rubber material but is very durable and seems to fit well in my truck. I have no complaints

Looks to be about a quarter inch thick rubber. Seems pretty flexible and connects with typical body fastners to plastic inner fender.

It is a stiff rubber material that bends easily but does not stretch.

Hi Tom, I bought and installed two of these "Passenger Side" splash shields for my 2002 Ford Ranger XLT with 4.0 engine and 4 wheel drive. To first answer your question, you are correct. They do in fact "sit above the control arm in the wheel well". On my truck, the passenger side installation was a drop in fit requiring only an oversize diameter push fastener for the center hole. The driver side installation required drilling two new holes in the inner wheel well for the center and second from the rear fasteners. The other three hole locations used holes already in the wheel well. The center hole in the splash shield was totally unuseable because it was located directly opposite the ABS controller brake lines inside the engine compartment. I had to locate a new hole a few inches away where there was nothing inside the engine compartment to damage with the drill. this was a pretty easy job on my truck. hope it helps you out.

Simple answer is yes. I bought these and installed on my 2000 ranger xlt. The cut out notches goes toward the bottom fitting over the control arms. Mine attached to the wheel well liner with 5 plastic push fasteners. It’s been a while since I installed them but I believe the driver and pass. side on my truck were the same. I believe on some especially 4x4 trucks they are different. Hope this helps.

It attaches to the bottom of the wheel well. It mounts opposite as shown in the photo with the small end facing toward the rear. The two notches with the small circles go over the two sides of the control arm.

Yes. It can be used on both sides. I did. Driver side is not a perfect fit. Need to punch a hole in a different location from original hole. That's all. Good luck.!
