Hi Bill, I'm pleased to assist you. Yes, it can be done by removing the whole bed. Personally, I would say drop the tank on your 1987 Ford F-150 Custom 6 Cyl 4.9L. I have a 89 f-250 and I had to drop the tanks to get to it…I am assuming yours will be the same like most vehicles and most trucks

Hi Austin, thank you for reaching out. This item doesn't include the external fuel pump. This item is only the in-tank fuel pump shown in the photo. Dear Austin, this is just the in tank pump. On my engine conversion build, this pump alone did not make enough fuel pressure to run a Ford 300's fuel injection system and I had to get the second fuel pump. This pump worked as needed without any troubles. Cheers!

Answered by Ty R. / Mon, Apr 11Question: How do i che k a fuel pump on a 1987 f350 with a 7.3 diesel?dewayne C. / Jan 31, 2022
Hello! As Edward said, you should hear the pump prime when you turn the ignition on. You could also try jumping the fuel pump relay and checking fuel pressure.
MD
When you cycle the key you should hear the fuel pump run you can also check fuse or relay
