Question: My car locks in park and won't shift.
I have to unhook the spring and push down on the part going into the shifter to unlock it. What parts do I need to fix it?John V. / Jan 25, 2023
Hi John, If your car locks in park and won't shift, and you have to manually push down on the part going into the shifter to unlock it, it is likely that you have a problem with the shifter mechanism or the shift interlock system. The shift interlock system is designed to prevent the car from being shifted out of park unless the brake pedal is depressed.

Hi Truvon, I'm pleased to assist you. This interlock is like a safety feature, it prevents the driver from switching to reverse while driving. The car must come to a full stop before the driver can switch gears. We suggest having the vehicle checked by a certified mechanic for real-time diagnosis and determine what part/s need replacement/s.
