Hi Shannon,
The xenon will also "warm up" and auto-level when you turn it on... so if the car is facing a wall, you'll see the lights start off more dim and quickly reach full brightness in about a second or two. The halogen, which will look yellowish like any normal halogen will turn on right away with it's light consistently with its basic brightness.
The xenon has a square or rectangular component at the back of the headlight which is the ballast or igniter. The first function of a ballast is to help your lamp start up quickly. When the lamp is turned on, the ballast provides a surge of higher voltage to the lamp. halogen headlight does not have any ballast at the back of the headlight. You will just see the wiring socket connector directly plugged into the bulb holder socket.
Also, it is best to check your owners manual for the headlight details and type.
