Hi- The utility compartment is the space on the bed fenders on each side that is designed and alotted for storage, such as keeping tool and other accessories you may need for your truck. If you do not have that one on your truck this is the exact direct fit tail light you need. There is a difference in design for the one appropriate for the one with utility compartment.

Those were the compartments that are inside the walls near the wheel wells or right inside the bed area.

Yes it does work. it’s missing the light that turns on when you open the tailgate but you can pull it off the old one
