Hi Randy, I'm glad to assist you. The usual signs of a defective VVT are rough idle, low fuel economy, check engine light turns on, and engine oil becomes dirty. Also, it can prevent the VVT actuator from getting the oil pressure it needs. When this happens, you may hear a rattling noise or ticking noise from the engine.
