AutoVent In-Channel VisorFront Window Visor, Smoke
5.0/5
PRICE POINT I would have prefered the WeatherTech snap-in design over the AutoVent glue-on design, but I bought AutoVent because it was half the price of WeatherTech. Price matters in my world, and half the price matters a lot.. I find the product worth the price I paid. APPEARANCE & FUNCTION I got the four-piece (front and rear windows) set for my 2012 Nissan Frontier SL Crew Cab. I was a little apprehensive about how they would look. But they look very nice on the vehicle -- they blend in very well. In fact, my wife didn't even notice them installed until I pointed them out. They also work as advertised. The smoke tint is just right. From the inside you can see through them so they don't block your view. From the outside, you can't tell the windows are cracked an inch or so. Being able to securely (and invisibly) crack the windows open an inch makes a big difference in a parked car -- allowing the interior to breath, and prevent heat build up -- no hotter than the outside. I have also tested them in the rain, and they work as expected. INSTALLATION The package includes a square pot scrubber pad and a separate alcohol wipe pak for each window. You could also use a regular pot scrubber pad if for some reason the included pot scrubber piece was missing, lost or you destroyed it. The installation instructions are pretty clear, but I've added my own comments below: REMOVING OXIDIZED RUBBER The pot scrubber is to remove oxidized rubber on the face of the window's rubber seal that the double-sided tape will fasten to. If you don't remove that oxidized layer, then you won't get a good bond. The alcohol wipe is for cleaning the rubber seal after the pot scrubber is used. You need to remove all loose material, so run the wipe over the surface twice or more. After the pot scrubber and alcohol pad I blew the widow channel out with compressed air to be sure all the contaminating dust was removed. SMOOTHING The edges of the visor are unfinished and rough. Only the bottom edge is exposed, so it is the only edge that needs smoothing. I used a piece of steel wool to smooth the bottom edge. It didn't take much work, and it leaves a smooth edge that won't snag clothing. I use compressed air to blow the visor clean of all dust and steel wool. DRY FIT The next step I did was dry fit the pieces in the window channels to make sure they were placed correctly. The tapered, curved front window pieces are pretty obvious as to proper orientation (the narrow end points forward, and the embossed AutoVent logo goes to the rear.) They fit snugly in the window channel. With the vents in-place I ran the windows all the way closed to make sure they would close properly and completely. The rear window pieces are straight, and proper orientation not so obvious. My vehicle has an unmovable rear portion of the window, and because of that the visor edges fit a little differently than the front visor piece. The rear visor has a discontinuous edge -- with the front of the visor running continuously from top to side, and the rear of the visor having a stand-alone tab. The top and front part of the visor edge have double-sided tape, and fit into the window channel just like on the front visor. However, the rear tab has no double-sided tape, and is designed to fit outside the window channel -- between the metal post and the outer rubber trim. This prevents the rear tab from interfering with raising the window glass. The rear visor also fits loose do you can place the rear tab correctly. Once you place the rear visor in place and remove the tape cover, you are not going to be able to re-position it. Most people (including me) miss that fine detail, and place the rear tab of the rear visor in the window channel, where it interferes with the raising the glass. Not to fret -- there is a cure that doesn't involve tearing the visor to pieces. Just butter the facing of the rear tab that contacts the channel (both surfaces) with some Gorilla Glue or Goop, keep the surfaces apart until the glue dries, then press them together, roll up the window completely, and leave in place for 24 hours (to let the glued surfaces completely bond.) TAPE IT ON Once satisfied with placement and orientation, the taping goes fast. Just pull off a pigtail of the tape facing long enough to catch with your fingers. I ran the windows all the way up before pulling the tape face off. But I couldn't pull it all off without lowering the window a smidge to release the pressure a little. DURABILITY Hard to say anything until I have had them awhile. I don't detect any problem at speed. The visors with the windows cracked an inch are much quieter than an open window - no noticeable wind buffet to induce vibration. The material is thin, and appears it might crack or break easily if any force was used on it. But I'm not going to test its limits. If the back tab of the rear window visor isn't glued down, it tends to block the window from rising, and that could potentially weaken and eventually crack and break the visor if left uncorrected. However, with proper installation and care, they should last for years. All-in-all, a good buy I would recommend to my friends, especially if purchased on sale with free shipping.
