While half of the new vehicles sold in the US are assembled domestically, this doesn’t necessarily mean they remain unaffected by President Donald Trump’s auto tariffs. Most vehicles sold in the US are composed of only 47% of parts made in the US or Canada, with the other half possibly imported from countries affected by the tariffs. Because of this, it’s more important than ever to know which popular cars are built in the US.
In 2024, Cars.com released an American-Made Index (AMI) to define just how American the 2024 top-selling vehicles actually are. The AMI focused on five major criteria:
With these factors in mind, here are the top-selling cars of 2024:
Owned by General Motors (GM), Chevrolet is an American brand that’s based in Detroit, Michigan. Most Chevy trucks are made in North and Central America, but GM also has factories in 35 countries, such as Canada, Mexico, and Japan.
Following the American Automobile Labeling Act (AALA), around 37% of the Silverado’s parts were made in the US or Canada.
The Toyota RAV4’s 2024 Hybrid model may rank on the AMI, but the RAV4 dominated the market as the top-selling SUV in 2024. It sold over 475,000 models, which is around a 9% increase in sales.
Most RAV4 Hybrids are made in Georgetown, Kentucky, where Toyota’s largest plant in the world is located. A third of the SUVs are also assembled in another plant in Ontario, Canada.
The Tesla Model Y has consistently topped the AMI rankings for three years now, so it’s safe to say it’s one of the most American cars built in the USA. 100% of all Tesla models are assembled in the US, and around 70% of its parts are made in the US or Canada.
Honda might be a Japanese automaker, but 75% of all Honda models sold in the US are actually assembled in one of their 12 facilities in the US. The CR-V is made in Greensburg, Indiana, with other Honda models manufactured in various factories in Ohio, Alabama, and North Carolina.
Like the RAV4 Hybrid, the 2024 Toyota Camry is also assembled in the Kentucky facility. The Camry is among the best-selling passenger cars in the US. While around 55% of the latest hybrid model’s parts are from the US and Canada, all of its transmissions are made in the US.
As a Japanese manufacturer, Nissan has a plant in Fukuoka, Japan, where some Nissan Rogue models are made. However, Nissan also has another facility in Tennessee, USA, where it produces the Rogue, Leaf EV, and other popular models.
Honda originally planned to transfer production of the Civic to Mexico, but the manufacturer later confirmed that its Indiana facility will continue production of the Civic’s next-generation hybrid. The brand plans to produce around 210,000 units in the US and will import more Civics from countries unaffected by tariffs.
While most Toyota and Lexus models offered in the US are assembled in Japan, the Toyota Corolla is produced in Toyota’s facility in Blue Springs, Mississippi. The Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi plant specializes in stamping, welding, painting, and more.
Most Jeep vehicles are made in the US, with some models equipped with around 70% American-made parts. The Grand Cherokee is produced in various Jeep facilities, including the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan. Jeep also has plants located in Ohio, Illinois, and Michigan.
In 2024, Ford’s popular muscle car ranked 31st on the AMI list, which is quite the jump from 72nd place in 2023. While Ford might be an American company, most of its parts are actually sourced from outside the US or Canada. The Mustang, however, is built in the Ford Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan.
In fourth place, the Model S is another EV that sits high on the AMI rankings. Tesla has several US facilities, with its first factory located in Fremont, California, where the Model S, 3, X, and Y are produced.
For over 40 years, the Bowling Green Assembly in Kentucky has exclusively produced the Corvette, Chevrolet’s iconic sports car. The facility also consists of a Performance Build Center, where the brand handcrafts the engines of various Chevrolet models.
Based on the AMI, the Chevrolet Corvette ranks 34th compared to other American-made cars.
