Not if you have the original key. You merely take the resistance of it with an ohms meter and buy a resistor to match the ohms and solder it in the orange wrapped wires and it will start every time. You won’t have the vats anymore but you won’t have any more problems with your ignition key lock cylinder. It’s not very difficult to do at all if you’re mechanically inclined and can solder. Hello! So the vehicle ran without a transponder chip, correct? Perhaps a wire was pinched or a connector wasn't fully seated when you lowered the steering column?

If the key that started the car does not have a VAT chip in it, someone bypassed the system. Check out utube VAT bypass. When you dropped the column to repair hi/lo beam you broke the VAT connection. I have a 91 corvette. The connection is 12-15 inches from the ignition inline with the column under an access panel. Look for a red wire with a amateur splice. I know your frustration all too well
