Hi Debra, That is only clipped on to the housing. You can wedge it outward or pop it out with a rubber spatula with a thin sharp end on the edges. Still, we recommend referring to a trusted vehicle specific repair manual for steps to replace the mirror cap. Hi. Sorry to say that the painted cover does not fit on the new assembly. I just had one broken mirror but since I could not put my red cap on that one I went ahead and replaced the other one so they’re both black and they match and look great.

Hi, Yes the mirror housing or cap can be painted. After painting it properly it will have that smooth glasslike feel.
