Hi Joel,
The back housing cap cover is removable. You can interchange it with your colored cap. Just be careful and use a soft spatula to pop off the cover from it's attachment.

The answer basically depends on how much time and care you want to take. I had a similar situation where I broke a mirror and replaced it, I have a grey CRV and the replacement cover is black. The colored part is not really intended to be replaced, as it is glued on quite tight. However by working slowly and with care I was able to remove the black cover, without doing too much damage. Fortunately nothing essential broke, but I did break a small piece, so I guess what I’m saying is attempt it based on how much risk you want to take. Honestly it may actually be better to just pay for painting, it’s up to you. Hope this helps..

The black cover is definitely removable....our CRV had a light blue cover and I bought this unit specifically because I didn't want to have to try and match paint. Popped off the black and replaced it with the original light blue cover! Just make sure you get the correct mirror so the shape is the same.

It is black. I had the plastic housing from my broken mirror (housing was not broken) and put that on the new mirror. That worked great and no hassle with painting.
