Question: How do you install these rocker panels on my '03 Grand Prix?Ted W. / Feb 15, 2021 / 2003 Pontiac Grand PrixDriver Side Rocker Panel
Hi Ted,
This part requires welding for installation. Professional installation from a certified body shop is highly recommended.

Hi Ted, I live in northern Illinois and we use road salt. Grand Prix of this vintage had barely any rust preventative on the rockers. NOTE: the inner rocker, front rocker section(not available anywhere and dog leg in front of wheel(not available anywhere) completely rust away. Even main structural steel behind front wheel and in front of rear wheel and lower pinch weld(part of the floor pan) was missing. I HAD to create these parts hand hammer/bending all of these parts and weld into place prior to even begin installing rocker panel. Then, you can begin normal replacement. Remove rear door to gain free access. Remove lower weather stripping and plastic interior pieces. Tape off interior with plastic to keep dust and gridings out of interior. I also cut cardboard for bottom of door entries because of the welding spatter from the MIG not to burn carpet or seats. Set new rocker over old and use black sharpie marker and outline the existing rocker that will needs to be cut out. Then, re-draw lines on top and ends because you need to leave 1/2" to 1" of existing rocker to weld on to. Then, drill out lower and upper spot welds. Then, cut out old rocker panel. Then, use a crimping tool(I used one that looks like a vice grip) to offset steel to allow welding. There will be a LOT of test fitting and cutting/grinding. I used small screws to keep new rocker in place as I test fit rocker. Once you feel confident you have it fit, use Sharpie marker to mark the panel about every 1" for MIG welds. Remove Rocker and drill at least 1/4" hole in new rocker to weld through. If you use Spot Welder on top pinch weld and lower pinch weld, you wont have to drill holes at those points. Before installing Rocker, I sprayed rust encapsulator from Eastwood/Rustoleum and then used epoxy primer over that, plus primed the new rocker inside and out. Weld Rocker in place. grind down MIG welds. use waterproof bondo to fill areas at welds. Prime, paint and clear the new rocker. Steve
