I just replaced my original K&N in my 2000 Nissan Xterra and it still looked ok after 75000 miles. That truck has been in every possible weather condition, burried in snow, ice, sand, and driven through swamps in Florida and the filter was still usable, albeit a bit broken down.
Can't go wrong for a 8 yr old filter.
