For starters, I'm not sure why they don't put these things in vehicles out of the factory. The price of these cleanable air filters is the same as one throw away OEM filter. It's economical and reduces the amount of stuff going into landfills.
Performance
I didn't have my truck long enough to see if there is a difference, as I threw in the K&N within a week of owning it. I'm still getting 14mpg city (Chi traffic) on my V4 S10 (4wd)
Will hopefully get some better mpg results on the one I got for my wifes Malibu 4cyl.
I will say the K&N I put in my Honda CBR 954RR had a noticeable difference. The RPMs needed to do say 80mph dropped by 2K rpm's. So essentially the engine has to work less to achieve the same performance. Which I believe is what gets you the better gas millage.
Again. even if there was Zero performance or fuel benefits from these filters, it's still worth purchasing as you can clean them and they'll basically last the life of the car.

K&N filter for my 2000 Dodge 2500 with Cummins Turbo Diesel kicks butt. Improve mileage, improved power and performance. What more could you ask for from a filter that is good for 100K and costs only 2/3rds more than the disposable type that only lasts 10K. Don't be a moron buy one.
